7.1.2 Volk’s Method

Volk proposes two variants of the same method to decide whether a PP attaches to an NP or VP. In this section, we describe both variants and discuss their results.

7.1.2.1 First Variant

In [194], Volk proposes uses the Web as a corpus to disambiguate PP attachments by considering the co-occurrence frequencies (freq) of verb+preposition constructions against those of noun+preposition constructions. The formula used to calculate these co-occurrence frequencies is: cooc(X,P) = freq(X,P) / freq (X)
